Pre-Employment Physicals - The Purpose
According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than 50 percent take two medications. This suggests a large portion of the nation’s workforce has one or more pre-existing conditions that could potentially affect their abilities to perform certain tasks in some jobs.
So it is a given that a significant percentage of potential employees have some health issues. Most (such as allergies) are unlikely to interfere with a person’s ability to work; other conditions requiring prescriptions, including opioids, may not be benign. This highlights the reason why a pre-employment physical makes sense.

Pre-Employment Physicals - The Process
This involves a general examination (pulse, blood pressure, examine eyes, throat, mouth, and ears), and a check for spinal issues or deformities, hernias, lung function, another neurological testing, and a vision test.
While we perform this test for all individuals in all industries, DOT rules require a potential driver to disclose known diagnoses of a number of conditions, including brain injuries, neurological disorders, epilepsy, hearing loss, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, missing limbs, spinal cord injuries, and other disorders. Some physical limitations will altogether prevent an applicant from holding a commercial driver’s license: if the individual takes injectable insulin for diabetes, for example, or if he or she has worse than 20/40 vision. Any use of a controlled substance (narcotics, opioids, amphetamines) also disqualifies a driver. These are rules established by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Results from the DOT physical exam are submitted to the DOT. The DOT issues a medical certificate to qualifying drivers that are valid for two years; drivers with conditions that require monitoring may get a certificate that expires in three, six or twelve months.
