Physical Abilities Testing - The Purpose
An employer knows, or learns over time, what the physical demands of a job are. This can come from simple observation, but in larger companies, it’s about accumulated medical and workers compensation data. An employer can also look at what its industry peers experience to know what degree of physical health and functioning will work best in each job – for employers as well as employees.
It will never make sense to hire someone to work at something that will hurt him or her and render the employee unable to stay in the job. Better that limitations be discovered first; perhaps an alternative position with fewer physical demands might be offered to them.

Physical Abilities Testing - The Process
Identification of physical ability requirements and employees who meet them happens in three steps:
Job function analysis – To avoid being discriminatory, an employer should first conduct an ADA-compliant job analysis. Here a licensed physical therapist does an objective analysis of what each job requires. This includes studying the positions a worker must be able to tolerate for extended periods of time, with what frequency, as well as the heights, depths, weight, and other factors that require a minimum degree of physical ability. Sensory functions, including vision, depth perception, color blindness, and hearing may matter and be included in the testing process.
Design a physical abilities test – Otherwise known as a “fitness for duty exam,” this is a set of testing protocols that answer the needs identified in the job function analysis. It needs to be comprehensive and should be pre-tested by an existing employee in the same job who can help verify or reject the protocols.
Conduct the tests – All communications with job candidates should mention the test will take place, but it will not be administered until after a conditional offer is made and before employment begins. Administering this through a third party helps reduce the risk of discriminatory practices.
